The name 'Lench', shared by five local villages, comes from an Anglo-Saxon word 'linch', meaning 'rising ground, hill'. There are five Lenches. In descending order of size, they are Church Lench, Rous Lench, Atch Lench, Sheriffs Lench and Ab Lench. Ab Lench is often mistakenly called 'Abbots Lench', but this is due a clerical error confusing the name of the village with the fact that the Lenches lands were owned for some time by Evesham Abbey. Ab Lench has never gone by the name Abbots Lench.

The ancient parish of Church Lench appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Its earliest recorded history reveals that it was a gift by Kenred of Mercia to Evesham Abbey in 708. Its church, All Saints, is currently Church of England, and its earliest recorded priest was in residence in 1086. The 12th-century church was significantly extended during the 14th century and the 15th century. Church Lench has been a farming community for all of its recorded history, although the civil parish was renamed from Church Lench to South Lenches on 18 December 2012.

Church Lench is a village in the civil parish of South Lench’s, in the Wychavon district, in the county of Worcestershire approximately 5.5 miles due north of Evesham and 13 miles due west of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is the largest of the surrounding ‘Lenches’, accommodating the Lenches Sports Club, the Lenches Members' Club, the ‘outstanding’ Church Lench CE First School, Church Lench preschool and the Church Lench Village Hall.

We bought Lyncroft back in 2010 knowing it would be a project and it has been a labour of love to transform and modernise it. We’ve made it a really comfortable and beautiful (in our opinion) home over the 10 years we’ve lived here and the house has grown and developed around us to be more than we ever could have anticipated.

We’ve always relished having so much of our own space to enjoy here, but it has really come into its own during the past few months. The now easy to maintain plot front and back is just gorgeous in the spring and summer for games, picnics and sunbathing with peace and privacy. We’ve even ensured it’s possible to work comfortably with a very good internet connection outside.

We have enjoyed walking straight off the end of the drive over the past few months and getting lost in the surrounding countryside, often not seeing another sole for hours, a small piece of tranquility which has helped us stay happy and healthy.

Undoubtedly our favourite place to be in the house is the snug, which is flooded with sunlight during the day and cosy in front of the wood burner at night. We love switching off and enjoying some R&R time here with a nice glass of wine. But the lounge with its huge wood burner and big Victorian radiator is where we entertain.

Having fitted the made-to-measure office furniture and upgraded the internet connection to fibre-optic, working from home has been a pleasure, especially with the little wood burner going on colder days, or equally grabbing a few rays of sunshine on the decking whilst keeping on top of work!

Outside, we have made concerted efforts to improve the biodiversity in the gardens and now bring many more birds and bees – we often see woodpeckers bouncing around and digging in the lush grass, hear owls calling at night and Wrens, Robins and Doves visiting through the day too. The trees are beautiful in autumn, along with the wildflowers including wild orchids popping up, if left to, in the front garden followed by toadstools and the occasional fairy ring in the Autumn. We are also on the ‘blossom trail’ that brings people from all around to see the village plum trees in full bloom each spring, of which we have two stunners out the front. And we’ve improved the soil in the new veg patch for growing our own produce – we have planted numerous fruit and nut trees and enjoy a harvest each year which is perfect for making our own jams, jellies, pies and even wine and cider.

We have made some lifelong friends in the village (and other local villages) and there are events to suit everyone organised by the local community. It really does give you the opportunity to interact as much or as little as suits you.

We’ve no doubt that Lyncroft’s next family will be very comfortable and happy here.
